Project Overview

A Monument for Future Losses

3D Modeling
Speculative Design

As part of a Speculative Design project, my senior design class was challenged to imagine and design for an aspect of the world in 2050. Many of my classmates focused on future global challenges, such as overpopulation, rising sea levels, nuclear warfare, and the erosion of environments. These topics disheartened me, so I decided to build a conceptual memorial for all future lost lives/habitats/cities/nations.

One of my main sources of inspiration is Magdalena Abakanowicz, a Polish sculptor who draws from her experiences in Poland under Nazi and Soviet occupation. She abstracts the human form to express inner suffering, isolation, and perseverance.

Tools:

Rhino 7 (3D modeling), Cinema 4D (animation), MDF

Sketch + 3d Modeling

I created a humanoid, hollowed-out form. Within my fine art practice, I have always been drawn to draped figures (check out some draped figures in watercolors here) -- naturally, I incorporated elements of an abstracted draped figure within my plan.

In designing this monument, I knew that the most efficient way to prototype the idea was by using a laser cutter. I had recently learned how to use the machine and was eager to explore 3D applications, especially with an organic form.

Final Deliverable

This MDF prototype was my final deliverable for the midterm project. In the end, it was 80+ sheets stacked.

Animation

As my senior thesis project required the use of 3D animation + rendering, I made this video as an experiment while testing out several features in Cinema 4D. I'm glad to investigate different materials and lighting arrangements in a digital setting.
